THE FANTASTICKS

All performers are paid.
We welcome actors of all races, genders, ethnicities, and backgrounds to audition.
Casting is open for any gender for the roles of El Gallo, Hucklebee, Bellomy, Henry, Mortimer, and Mute.
The young lovers, Luisa and Matt, will be cast as female and male. Trans actors welcome.
The vocal range will be adjusted depending on the actor cast.
Henry, Mortimer and The Mute do not sing.

Roles:
The Narrator. Rakish, good looking, sophisticated. Age: 30+. High baritone.
Luisa. Young and pretty, romantic idealist. Age 16-24; Soprano.
Matt. An innocent young man searching for love and adventure. Age 18-26; Baritone.
Hucklebee and Bellomy, the children’s fathers. They argue and bicker while secretly plotting for the marriage of their children. AGES: 40+. Not trained singers.
Henry. An aging Thespian who specializes in reciting Shakespeare Age: 50+.
Mortimer. Henry’s goofy sidekick who specializes in stage deaths. Age: 50+.
The Mute–A speechless presence who watches, acts as the wall, and deals with props; the “invisible stage assistant. Dance, mime, or acrobatic skills a plus.
Synopsis: The longest running musical show ever. Award winning. Born out of the Beat Generation of the 1950’s, The Fantasticks is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl, and their two parents who try to keep them apart. The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in the words spoken by El Gallo, "without a hurt, the heart is hollow."

Now in its 16th year, Summer Shortcuts XVI will present six new ten-minute plays selected from 168 submissions and produced in a single program with eight performances over two weekends.
Five of the six directors include Darlene DeMaille, Willow Harrington, Pip Merrick, Tim Main and EIizabeth Sherr. We are seeking one more.
In-person auditions will be held at The Open Eye Theater, 960 Main Street, Margaretville on Thursday, July 9 from 2:00-5:00pm; and Sunday, July 12 from 6:00-8:00pm.
Actors will be given scenes from the plays to read. Prepared short monologues are encouraged. All positions are paid a modest fee.
